Recent Earthquakes

On Wednesday, December 16, 1988 at about 4:45 a.m. local (10:45:34 UTC) a 2.4 magnitude earthquake struck about 8.98 km south of Blytheville in northeast Arkansas. The USGS placed the event at 35.86N 89.95W.

Clay County Earthquake Seminars

"Preparing for the Big One", a free 3-hour earthquake preparedness seminar for businesses, is scheduled to be presented twice in Clay County in January 1999. The first seminar will be from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 14th at the Corning Community Center. The second will be from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 21st, at the Piggot Community Center.

The seminar will cover the New Madrid Fault and threat, earthquake mitigation and preparedness, and earthquake and disaster response and recovery including post-disaster business loans and assistance. The presenter is Timothy Lee of the UALR Arkansas Small Business Development Center.
