September 17, 1997 Earthquake
Trumann - Caraway area
A Richter magnitude 3.8 earthquake occured on Wednesday, September 17, 1997 at about 1:17 p.m. The tremor was centered in an area about 20 miles southeast of Jonesboro, Arkansas in the Trumann - Caraway area.
Minor damage at a day-care center and a piano company in the Trumann - Caraway area was reported by the Arkansas State Police. Students at Trumann Elementary School in Trumann got under their desks and later evacuated the school.
Some residents in nearby Jonesboro, including students at Nettleton High School, reported feeling the tremor. Students in the Twin Towers, Kays Hall, and Chickasaw buildings of Arkansas State University in Jonesboro also reported feeling the earthquake.
The last minor earthquake felt in the area occurred in Blythville in November 1996.
